I think the easy route for criticism of this film is its over-the-top violence. Sure, hearing an 11-year old girl say cunt and killing everyone in sight is not something you expected and/or want to see on a Friday afternoon, but let’s be honest, 11-year old girls are doing some pretty fucked up things as I type this. Does the movie say that it’s okay to do these things? Not exactly. It’s just like every other movie like this, where the violence is justified because the people being killed are bad guys. Hell, I’m from Texas, and that’s our justification for executing nearly a 100 people a year. Does that make it right? No.
Roger Ebert stirred up a little controversy over the film on Twitter when he attacked it’s violence in his review and the micro-blogging website: “Shall I have feelings, or should I pretend to be cool? Will I seem hopelessly square if I find “Kick-Ass” morally reprehensible and will I appear to have missed the point?,” Ebert wrote in his review.
Ebert went on to give the film one star. I feel that he’s a bit of a hypocrite considering he gave “Inglourious Basterds”four stars. And lets be honest, the violence in that movie is pretty tough to stomach at times. Is Ebert right? Is Kick-Ass too violent?
I’m patiently waiting for The Pacific to start on HBO. I’ve been bombarded with ads for months. I remember watching Band of Brothers years ago and so I know that The Pacific will likely live up to that standard of excellence if not surpass it. As I wait though, I wondered what other miniseries have I seen that have really stood out in my young life.
I came up with only three that I think everyone has to see at least once. I realize now what a bad list this is but I’m afraid I don’t have a lot of experience watching miniseries. It’s hard for TV sometimes to compare to movies. Hell two of the examples I’ve included have the backing of HBO and the lack of censorship too. Only one was on actual network TV.
My parents and everyone from a prior generation will attest to the power of the miniseries. They all remember I, Claudius , Roots , The Thornbirds , and Shogun, but I wasn’t born during some and the others I was only an infant. So I submit to you my miniseries recommendations.

The Oscar nominations are out. I’m not sure what to say. First why the hell do people think that Avatar is a great movie? I saw it. It was fun. The effects were impressive but it was not a great movie. It is not one of the top ten movies of the year. I was over the fact that it won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Drama. I assumed it would be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards but I hoped it wouldn’t.
Rounding off the films for Best Picture are The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, A Serious Man, Up and Up in the Air.
All of these were to be expected. The only real surprise was A Serious Man. Great movie but I assumed everyone forgot about it once Avatar was released. Up is also a surprise. I thought the purpose of creating the animated feature award was so they would still be recognized. It makes sense that it be included in both but seems a little unfair to the other great movies that were ignored. Hopefully The Hurt Locker or Precious will win this.
The Golden Globes are coming January 17th and the Academy Awards won’t be far behind. So obviously it is time for everyone to name they’re favorite film of the year. Black Beard busted out his favorite of the decade. I’ve refrained. I just can’t think of one film among all the great ones of the [...]
