Academy Awards

I want to thank everyone at the Academy Awards last night who wore a beard in solidarity with the contributors of this site. It’s a great compliment to know that we’ve influenced their work so much. Here are a few examples:

Screenwriter Mark Boal, director Kathryn Bigelow and producer Greg Shapiro

Kathryn Bigelow and her Big-O-Win (Sorry, couldn't resist)

First of all, let me just say once again that Helen Mirren is the sexiest woman on the planet. Well, second sexiest, my fiancée is the first of course. Okay, now that I have that out of the way; let’s talk about the Oscars.

I want to be the first to thank the Academy for not recognizing Avatar as the Best Picture or James Cameron as the Best Director. Avatar is still a crap movie. Just being nominated and even winning awards for the special effects doesn’t validate the film. Neither does an impressive box office. Let me be very clear: AVATAR IS A CRAP MOVIE! Now I used all caps and an exclamation point, so I’m pretty sure that means that it’s official.

A friend or family member or someone, hell I’ll take credit, but someone I know said that Avatar was a mixture of Fern Gully and Pocahontas . I think that sums it up perfectly. If I hear one more thing about James Cameron’s great vision I will jam pencils into my ears and dig out my eyes with a spoon. I’ll tell you what James Cameron’s vision looks like: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

District 9 is kind of the little darling of the Best Picture nominees. It is not likely to win but everyone is glad it was nominated. Few people know that Neil Blomkamp was noticed by Peter Jackson after watching his short film Alive in Joburg. Jackson and Blomkamp tried to adapt the video game Halo until funding fell through. Ultimately they decided to turn Blomkamp’s short film into a feature and the rest is history. Check out the original short below.

Shorts Online: Jane Campion’s Peel

February 11, 2010

Only four women have ever been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director: Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties (1976), Jane Campion for The Piano (1993) and Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation (2003). Kathryn Bigelow is the fourth. She is nominated this year for The Hurt Locker. Of the four, none have won. I [...]
