Watch Alive in Joburg. The Short that Became District 9

District 9 is kind of the little darling of the Best Picture nominees. It is not likely to win but everyone is glad it was nominated. Few people know that Neil Blomkamp was noticed by Peter Jackson after watching his short film Alive in Joburg. Jackson and Blomkamp tried to adapt the video game Halo until funding fell through. Ultimately they decided to turn Blomkamp’s short film into a feature and the rest is history. Check out the original short below.

No problems. There are a ton of great movies that started from shorts. Sling Blade and Bottle Rocket come to mind.
