Only four women have ever been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director: Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties (1976), Jane Campion for The Piano (1993) and Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation (2003). Kathryn Bigelow is the fourth. She is nominated this year for The Hurt Locker. Of the four, none have won. I expect Bigelow will be the first.
