First Ever We Have Beards Community Review: Avatar

by Red Beard on January 6, 2010

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT RED BEARD?

James CameronWell I’ll tell you. Part of our desire here at We Have Beards is to start a conversation about the arts. Everyone loves to sit around a table and discuss what they’re watching, reading or listening to. We’re no different. In fact some of us have addictions to these things.

It’s important to us that this not be a one-sided conversation. So I want to invite everyone to help me review Avatar. Help us start the conversation. Let’s talk to each other.

Read all of the comments before posting. Then add your own take. Don’t be afraid to address a specific opinion. There are no dumb comments. Unless you count what I’m going to say.

REVIEW BEGINS NOW

Avatar has already made over one billion dollars and will likely make two to three billion by the time DVD sales and TV deals are made. But does money mean everything? I’ve heard the film being compared to Fern Gully and thought that was appropriate. I myself thought it was just like Disney’s Pocahontas.

It was no doubt fun but what happened to James Cameron? The man who brought us Abyss. A beautifully made, well-written film. Avatar was full of poorly written dialogue and scenes stolen from other movies. I don’t think the quality of a film should be measured by how much money it will bring in but I’m not naive enough to think that the bottom line isn’t the deciding factor in whether a film is made but I was hoping that an artist like James Cameron would decide to make a movie based on the quality of the story and not on how much money he could make.

So for me Avatar was a let down in terms of art but I guess a success in terms of entertainment. I just wish that the old James Cameron was still around because then he might have been able to be successful in both.

Now tell me what you think.

I enjoyed Avatar very much and yes it did compare to Fern gully alot. I felt that it was very beautiful and the colors and the imagination of the land and the animals was amazing. I myself felt that it reminded of the Native Americans and us going in and destroying their land and overtaking them. But having said that it was still great and I had a great time watching it. It was long but I did not get bored watching it. The two main characters and their relationship is what keep me hooked.

I haven’t seen it, so maybe I shouldn’t be posting a comment, but whatever. The reason I haven’t seen Avatar is because I never saw the appeal. I mean, the plot didn’t seem in anyway super original. Ok, it was animated. That’s not a new film genre. I don’t get it. Someone enlighten me (as I’m sure my friend with the red beard will :)

I had really looked forward to seeing this movie. The live action in conjunction with the animated really interested me. I was not sure exactly how the two were going to work together. Visually it looked very exciting. It was not until I started watching the movie that I did see the similarities between Avatar and Fern Gully. That was a little disappointing to me. I really was looking for a more original storyline. But let’s face it, it is really hard to get originality anymore. Everything is a sequel or a remake but just on a bigger scale. Okay, now back to Avatar. I don’t want to sound too negative because I really did enjoy the movie. It was exciting, it made you think how we treat people, about the kind of person you should be. Overall, I was not disappointed, it was still a good experience, and I would probably go see it again. I know I will definitely buy it when it comes out.

Just saw Avatar (in 3D). It was alright, just like Ferngully on shrooms.
I was annoyed by most of the 'animals', but I'm am not a big fan of sci-fi fantasy-type fiction, so I was expecting that.
I loved Weaver's character but I became insanely annoyed when I realized that she was never going to say 'fuck'. It may be stupid, but I'm partial to that word, and I believe it would have been an essential part of the good doctor's vocabulary. I'm SURE it would be.
This, like many things, prevented my investment. I can't put my finger on all the things that I didn't love, but I can say my eyes were entertained. Kudos to the special effects peeps. They deserve it.
I am really looking forward to future 3D movies of this calibur.

    I didn't see it in 3D. I didn't see the benefit. I guess I am a
traditionalist. It is too gimmicky to me. When I see a movie that I
liked I'll see it in 3D and 2D to make the comparison. I don't think
    I'll see Avatar in 3D.

I know what you mean about fuck. I feel like that would be a common
word if you were in that world. I'd be fuck this and fuck that. Just
    nonstop fucking.

    :)
I normally don't like 3D either, but this was not gimiky. It was mostly only the environment that was ever in 3D and it was really cool. The best part of the 3D feature was the fight with the helicoptors at the end. It made that part particularly sweet.

However, I doubt that you would want to go see it again just to see it in 3D….. You should consider seeing Alice In Wonderland in 3D though, the preview looked pretty neat.
